Kyle Cameron Messerle lost his life on Tuesday July 11, 2023 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Cedar Rapids on the evening of Wednesday July 5. He was kept comfortable on life support in the ICU at St. Luke's Hospital where his parents visited and gave him love every day. After testing revealed brain damage too severe to be compatible with life, he passed away peacefully at 10:01 PM. We are so grateful that he was able to be an organ donor, per his wishes, helping three other people.

Kyle was born December 14, 1989 and raised in Iowa City by his parents in a loving and fun household. The family had many wonderful outings and trips and during the winter the house basement was literally a playground enjoyed by everyone. Both he and his sister had many friends in the neighborhood and at Hoover Elementary, Southeast Junior High, and City High. Kyle was a 2008 graduate of Iowa City High School and attended Santa Barbara City College in California for two years.

His numerous friends all speak of his outgoing nature, his kindness and his legendary willingness to help and support them and others. He was so sensitive to others’ needs and clearly had a heart of pure gold. He was intellectually brilliant with a huge range of knowledge, funny, a talented athlete and a gifted artist. He was a superb chess, pinochle and pool player as well as an extraordinary pizza cook. Kyle loved Camp Wapsie, California, nature, all animals, plants and flowers, music, going to concerts, Harry Potter, the wisdom of Albert Einstein, cooking good food with his mom, going to restaurants and being with his friends. He was a budding entrepreneur, recently starting a business selling and donating collectibles. He was happy to share a trip with us to Sedona, AZ in May – it was a fabulous trip and he enjoyed it immensely. He was thrilled to eat delicious food while sitting in the actual seat that Maynard James Keenen (lead of his favorite band Tool) sat in when he came to his Merkin Vinyards Tasting Room & Osteria in Cottonwood AZ. We also traveled to a store and tasting room high up in the hills of Jerome, AZ that carries Keenen merchandise. All of Kyle’s friends know he had a beautiful tattoo from one of Tool’s album covers.

The family would like to thank all of their friends and Kyle’s friends for their support throughout his journey. Sincere thanks to Peg Nopoulos, MD and Jill Liesveld, MD at UIHC for their care, compassion and responsiveness, and to the Iowa City and Cedar Rapid EMTs for the incredible work they do. Finally, words cannot express our appreciation for the incredibly compassionate and tender care Kyle received in the St Luke’s Hospital ER and ICU and from the Iowa Donor Network.

Left to grieve his loss are his parents, Lou Messerle and Kathi Cameron Madison; his sister, Kristen Messerle; his paternal grandmother, Helen Messerle; His cousins, Lisa Hill, Roxanne Messerle and Ronald Messerle Jr. He was preceded in passing by his maternal grandparents, Caroline (Granny) and Richard (Granddad) Madison; his paternal grandfather, Louis Messerle Sr (Pop-Pop); and his uncle, Ronald Messerle.

No memorial services are planned. He will rest in the Cherish Columbarium at Oakdale Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Kyle C. Messerle Memorial Fund, 308 E. Burlington St., P.O. Box 234, Iowa City, IA 52240-1602. All funds will go to charities that Kyle hoped to support in the future and to help organizations that deal with mental health and drug dependency issues.

He knew how much he was loved as we said it to each other every single day and we know his beautiful soul is at peace. We are thankful for the years we had with him and will remember him and miss him and his big bear hugs every day until we join him in the cosmos he so loved.
