James Morgan (Jim) Roberts passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

According to Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society to support cancer research and care.

James was born to Margaret (Sullivan) and Leonard Roberts on June 19, 1946, in Estherville, Iowa. Jim spent his childhood in Estherville and graduated from Estherville High School in 1964. Jim moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1966. On April 11, 1969, Jim married Phyllis Alshouse, and the couple had two children, Jeff and Brad. Jim and Phyllis moved to North Liberty, Iowa in 1994.

Jim worked as a foreman at Wilson Foods/Farmstead Foods in Cedar Rapids for 24 years before driving trucks over the road for West Side Trucking in Cedar Rapids and GSTC in Walford, Iowa for five years before transitioning to dispatcher and logistics/warehouse manager for GSTC for 13 years until his retirement in 2008.

Aside from work, Jim enjoyed following the many extra-curricular and athletic activities of his grandchildren. Jim was a lifelong fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and one of his favorite pastimes was tailgating with friends at “The Garage.”

Jim will be best remembered for his love of his family and friends.

Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis; his children Jeff (Amy) Roberts of Morgan Hill, California and Brad (Melissa) Roberts of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren Tyler and Ryan Roberts of Morgan Hill and Blake, Brooke, and Braelynne Roberts of Chandler; sister Kathy (Rick) Dalen of Estherville, Iowa; brother Mike Roberts of Marengo, Iowa; sister-in-law Sandy Mortel of Kingman, Arizona; and several cousins as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Leonard, and his parents-in-law, Shirley and Dale Alshouse.
