Shirley Ann Burnett, 90, of Iowa City, passed away on April 23, 2023 at Lone Tree Care Center.

Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City. Private family interment will be at Cosgrove Cemetery.

Shirley was born on March 3, 1933 in Cosgrove, Iowa to John and Mary (Holland) Donohoe. She was raised in Cosgrove and graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1950. She was united in marriage to Donald Burnett on May 18, 1957 at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

While raising seven children, Shirley still managed to work at the University of Iowa registrar’s office for over 20 years.

Shirley was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and caregiver to many. She was very involved with her church; from teaching religious education and attending adoration to leading the rosaries. Shirley enjoyed sewing, cooking, playing cards, figuring out jigsaw puzzles and attending family gatherings. She was also an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan.

Shirley is survived by her children: Kathy (Steve) Sternad, Marge (Tab) Ray, Tim (Rita) Burnett, Mary Burnett, Linda Sandhu, Phyllis Burnett and Diane (Andy) Cooper; grandchildren: Matthew (Jenny) Sternad, Katie (Tom) Barnett, Jasper (Karen) Ray, Kelsey Christeson, Whitney Burnett, Travis Burnett, Alexis (Drew) McCoy, Kimberly (Josh) Sandhu-Cox, Michaeljit (Isaac) Sandhu, Luke (Shannon) Cooper and Ashlea (Will) Kohman; great grandchildren: Steven, Sadie, Harper, Hadley, Elin, Theo, Lily and Sophie; siblings: Jeannie (Leon) Shaw, Larry (Jan) Donohoe, Mary Kay Hull, Robert (Tammy) Donohoe, William (Chere) Donohoe, Kathy (Jack) Wombacher, Richard (Val) Donohoe and James Donohoe. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, JoAnn Rohr and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald; parents; sister, Lois Kral; brother-in-law, Milo Kral; nephew, Dennis Kral and her grandson, Anthony Michael Hendershot.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree.
