Thomas Wayne Meder was born near Elizabeth, Minnesota to Arnold and Liala Meder on March 14, 1940. A celebration of life will be held in the Kirkwood Room at Lensing Funeral Home on April 28th from 4:00-7:00pm. Everyone is invited to bring their motorcycle or bicycle helmet for a small tribute table display during the celebration. Casual attire is perfect. Everyone is encouraged to wear red, his favorite color.
Tom graduated from Iowa City High School in 1958 and was employed by Iowa Valley Milling as their mechanic, electrician, plumber, and jack-of-all-trades for 31 years until the plant closed. He then worked for Don’s Honda Motorcycle Shop in Iowa City and Turner’s Small Engine Repair in West Branch before retiring.
He married Twila Ferrel in 1964. They have three children: Timothy (Darcy), Teresa, and Tracy, and eight grandchildren: James, Alyson, Michael, Rachael, William (Michelle), Lane, and Quincy.
Tom was an avid motorcyclist racking up more than 500,000 miles on various machines while traveling from Florida to Alaska, California to Maine. He was a drag racer in his early 20’s and in later years a rally competitor with many trophies and ribbons to prove his riding skills and ability to keep even his oldest motorcycle running well and looking just as good. He liked to tinker with his motorcycles, trying to make them fit him (and Twila) and make each one of them perform to the best of its ability. He loved taking “the road less traveled.”
Tom was known as someone who could talk to anyone, anywhere, about anything. His interests were broad and wide. He had friends all across the country. No one was a stranger to him for very long.
Tom leaves behind his wife, three sisters: Patricia (Richard) Roberts, Mary (Al) Copeland, and Kathy Meder as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Terry (Mary Ann), a nephew David, and his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hawkeye Model Railroad Club or the First United Methodist Church of North Liberty.
