Albert Howard Coates, 71, of Coralville, Iowa passed away peacefully on April 15, 2023 at Lantern Park Specialty Care.
Visitation will be held on Thursday April 20, 2023 from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City with a service to begin at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to his family to be distributed to organizations that were important to Albert.
Albert was born on June 20, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, where he grew up and later graduated from Hirsh High School. Albert’s career was spent in food production working various jobs throughout his life.
After moving to Coralville in 2003, he spent a lot of his free time volunteering at the Crisis Center. He also enjoyed relaxing, listening to music and spending hours doing puzzles. Albert was a strong, caring, and trusting father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. If Mr. Al (something that his friends called him) were guilty of anything, it was being too trusting and caring. He loved his children, grandchildren, mother, father, brothers, nieces, nephews, and friends with all he had. He will always be loved and missed.
He is survived by his mother Jeanette Coates of Gary, IN, three brothers William Coates Sr. of Chicago, IL, Samuel Coates of Gary, IN, and Alonzo Coates Jr. (Ruby) of Gary, IN, two daughters Alaina Havens (Jason Bailey) of Dubuque, IA, and Jamie Moody (Richard Kimber) of Atlanta, GA, three sons Albert, Alonzo and Joseph, a nephew to whom he was very close to, William “Tobey” Coates Jr. of Coralville, IA, six grandchildren Tristin, Chandler, Vince, Micah, Aaliyah and Richard, great niece DaNia, great nephew DeMarkus, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Albert was preceded in death by his birth mother Catherine Thompson, father Alonzo Howard Coates, two sisters-in-law Adrian Coates and Monica Williams, and grandson Ryker Havens-Pinkham.
