Debra Kay Cheney, 66, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 29, 2023 surrounded by her two sons and family.

Family and friends will celebrate her life on Friday, April 7, 2023 from 4 PM to 6 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Committal Services will be at 11 AM, Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Elmwood Cemetery in DeWitt, IA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Deb was born July 31, 1956 in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Philip Malcom and LaVerta (Schmidt) Cheney. She was raised in DeWitt. Debra received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and her master’s degree from Marycrest College.

Deb was a lifelong teacher working as a classroom teacher in Welton and then as a Math Specialist in the ICCSD where she mentored teachers in the classroom, assessed students, presented districtwide professional development, and tutored students in math. She also worked for the Grant Wood Area Education Agency servicing school districts in the Cedar Rapids area.

Deb loved spending time with her family and many friends. She was known for her sense of humor, quick wit, and loyalty to those close to her. Most important to Deb were her two sons to whom she devoted her life.

Deb is survived by her two sons, Ted McNulty of Iowa City and Andrew McNulty of Dallas, TX; her mother, LaVerta Cheney of DeWitt, IA; her siblings, Carol Wall of Donahue, IA, Richard (DeeAnn) Cheney of Bellevue, IA, and Martha (Leo) Mullen of DeWitt, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Deb was preceded in death by her father and brother-in-law, Nick Wall.
