Erma Jo Thomas, 89, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2023, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence. She was known as “Erda” to her many friends. Erma was born on June 30, 1933, in Iowa City and spent all her years there. Per her request she has been cremated with no funeral, as she has always found them very depressing.

Erma Jo graduated from Iowa City High in 1953 and The University of Iowa in 1962. She was employed by The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for 36 years, retiring in June 1990.

One of her many joys in life was her garden, which she spent many hours working in. Erma was also an ardent “collector”, specially of “smurfs”, and she never passed up a chance to go to a toy show or flea market. After retirement Erma traveled; she seemed to have many friends all over the United States, and took trips whenever it was possible. She also loved to work in friends’ gardens and yards, always trying to tell them how to do their gardening. Erma had to admit that she was not always right but loved doing it anyway.

Her friends were always very important to her life, not to be pre-empted by her companion who was there through thick and thin. Her list of friends could go on and on. Needless to say, they know who they are and she would be delighted if they would all get together and have a party and be sure to have at least one drink in memory of her. She may be gone, but she will not be forgotten. You will see her every spring and summer in all the flowers which are in bloom.

Erma is survived by her companion of over 30 years, Kay Burke; brother, Bill (Yvonne) Thomas of Marion, IA; niece, Diane (Jerry) Yockstick of Nashua, IA and their son, Drew; nephew, Eric (Lori) Thomas of Marion, IA and their sons, Cam and Bill.
