Our beautiful mother, Joyce Lyn Hofmann, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 27, 2023. She was a lifelong resident of Iowa City until moving to Cedar Rapids in 2008 to be near family.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City with Father Stephen Witt officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5 PM to 7 PM. Burial with military honors will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Longfellow Elementary School BTA - Building Fund, PO Box 167, Iowa City, Iowa 52244.
Joyce was born June 29, 1943 in the family home in Iowa City, the daughter of William and Janet (Lockwood) Grandrath. She was a 1961 graduate of City High School. Joyce was a graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1965 to 1967, during the Vietnam War. She earned the rank of First Lieutenant and was a nurse in the U.S. Army at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora, CO.
On July 8, 1971 Joyce married Benedict Hofmann in Iowa City.
Joyce was very involved in her children’s lives. She was a Girl Scout Leader, past president of the Longfellow PTA, and was involved with their activities at Southeast Junior High. The family hosted exchange students from Germany and the Czech Republic.
Most important to Joyce was her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
Joyce is survived by her three daughters and three grandchildren, Laurel (David) Shelley and their daughter, Cassandra; Heather (Monkut) Sayasit and their children, Scarlett and Dallas, all of Cedar Rapids; and Heidi (Justin) Hofmann-Wall of Osage Beach, MO; her sister, Margee Lea (Rob) Fulton of Santa Maria, CA; foreign exchange students who were like sisters, Charo Gerhardt, Nina Koenig and Vladka Kartouskova; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benedict in 2020; and brothers, Howard and Jon.
