Dorothy Jean Spratt was born January 24, 1954, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City the daughter of William and Gretchen (Kleopfer) Spratt. Growing up in Oxford, she attended Clear Creek Schools graduating with the Class of 1972. For years she worked at the Colony Inn in the Amanas, and later at the University of Iowa Hospital School. But the “job” she loved with all her heart was serving as president of the Altar & Rosary Society at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford. This she did with such love and devotion in all the task that were required, but especially in arranging funeral luncheons after a funeral service for a parishioner. She made the luncheon as important as the funeral itself, in making sure every detail was taken care of and that the families were able to enjoy the support of all those who came without a concern in the world. Funeral Directors appreciated Dorothy beyond belief, all it took was one phone call and she handled it, no worries. We loved our Dorothy! In addition to taking care of her church family, she was one that would drop everything to help anyone, didn’t matter who you were or what you needed. She was also one of the biggest Iowa Hawkeye Fans, her family would say, she bled the black & gold.
Her family includes her brother, Bill; 4 nieces and nephews, Becky Thatcher, Bonny Ronan (Tom), Barbara Thatcher, and Ryan Spratt (Natalie); 3 great-nephews, Gavin Thatcher, Luke Moorehouse and Benjamin Moorehouse.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Rita Thatcher.
