Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be held at Oakland Cemetery.
Dorothy was born to Herbert and Lottie (Thomas) Eberhart on November 5, 1917 in Youngstown, Ohio. She attended schools in Warren and Bedford, Ohio, graduating from Bedford High School in 1935. In 1939 she graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in English and a teaching degree. At that time it was difficult for women to get a teaching job so she also attended a secretarial school in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dorothy married Paul Seebohm on July 13, 1942 at Heights Christian Church in Shaker Heights, Ohio. They had a week to plan a wedding prior to leaving for Paul’s first assignment in the US Air Corp. Until the end of WWII, they had lived all over the country at various Army bases.
Following the war they lived in Cincinnati and New York City. Dorothy worked in the offices of The Ohio National Life Insurance Company, New York Central Railroad and the Bell Telephone Company.
In 1949 the couple moved from New York City to Iowa City and from then on, Iowa City was home. After their daughter, Karen was born, Dorothy became a stay-at-home Mom. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, P.E.O. Chapter KZ, University Club and various bridge clubs. Her volunteer work included the American Lung Association, American Heart Association and Girl Scouts.
Dorothy enjoyed traveling with Paul to medical meetings; most importantly to Europe in 1979 about which she wrote a memoir under the pen name of Jane Hart.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Karen Jackson (Kurt Kostiv); step grandchildren: John (Kimberlee) Jackson and their children of Iowa City, Valerie Jaxson (Les Aasheim) of Kalispell, Montana, Matthew Kostiv of Iowa City and Jacob (Emma) Kostiv of Marion; niece, Joan (Ted) Anderson of Vista, California and their children: Jonas (Ivette) Anderson and Arthur Anderson also of California. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Paul and her son in law, Jack Jackson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement for the Paul M. and Dorothy E. Seebohm Allergy Education Fund (1 W. Park Road, Iowa City, IA 52242.)
The family would like to thank Dr. Rachael Dirksen of Remedy Internal Medicine, Cathy Tholen, Lavon Yeggy and the entire staff of HomeSafe for their excellent care over the past 10 years.
