Brian L. Maass, age 63, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Iowa City on February 15, 2023.
Brian was born May 13, 1959, the son of Elmer and Alma (Garrels) Maass. He graduated from Remsen-Union High School in Remsen, IA in 1977. He then went on to get his Associates Degree in Accounting from Nebraska College of Business in 1979 and a Paralegal/Legal Assistant Degree from Kirkwood Community College in 1997. Brian worked in the grocery business in Omaha, NE for many years working at Food City and then transferring to EconoFoods in Iowa City in 1990. In 1997, he was hired as an Abstractor at Security Abstract Company/Willis Law Firm (now known as Security Abstract Company/Meardon Sueppel & Downer P.L.C) and was employed there until his passing.
Brian was a hardworking, fun-loving man, and was always willing to help. He was compassionate and had a deep faith. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid Hawkeye sports fan with football and women’s basketball being his favorites. His knowledge of past and present Hawkeye player stats and scores was unlike any other. His detail-oriented nature allowed him success in so many aspects of his life. Most of all he loved his family. Brian’s passing leaves an emptiness in our lives, but his legacy will continue on through all who love him.
Brian’s family include his cherished wife of 23 years, Janell; children, Kristi Maass and Alex Maass; siblings, Pamela (Tom) Maass Jeneary and Dean Maass; nieces and nephews, Greg (Anne) Jeneary, Phil (Lindee) Jeneary, Julia (Julio) Maass, Monica Maass, Courtney Chalupa and Marissa Chalupa; parents-in-law, Tom and Jan Kappes; sisters-in-law, Anna Chalupa and Miyoko Maass; and brother-in-law, Brian Chalupa. Sadly, Brian is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Alma; and brother, Jerry Maass.
A simple cremation has been arranged in accordance with Brian’s wishes and a visitation/memorial service will be Wednesday, February 22nd at 10:00 AM at Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Brian’s memory are suggested to Iowa Hawkeye Sports. Please continue to keep Brian’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
