Gordon Earl Shelman, 65 of North Liberty, passed away on January 11, 2023, in North Liberty following a brief illness.

Gordon was born February 20, 1957 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Gordon Laverne and Mary Ruth (Galloway) Shelman. Gordon was raised on the family farm in rural Washington. After graduating from Washington High School in 1975, he attended Kirkwood Community College and obtained a degree in Diesel Mechanics. Gordon worked for Nemecek, Inc. in North Liberty for 8 years before starting his own business, Shelman’s Repair, which he owned and operated for 8 years. For the past 20 years, he was manager of the hardware department at Liberty Door in North Liberty. He retired in January of this year.

Gordon married Dorothy Woodson on July 14th, 1979. The couple had two children, a daughter, Toni, and a son, Scott. The couple later divorced.

Gordon was an avid hunter of deer and turkey. He and his brothers spent many hours in tree stands on the family farm over the years. Time was not only spent hunting, but enjoying nature, sharing stories and creating memories. Gordon also liked mushroom hunting, camping, watching movies, and taking photographs, especially of sunsets. Gordon enjoyed time spent with family and friends, in particular with his grandchildren.

Gordon is survived by his father, Gordon L. Shelman of Washington, IA, daughter Toni (Chad) Vaughn of North Liberty, IA, son Scott (Stephanie) Shelman of North Liberty, IA, sister Meleia Shelman (John) Kanselaar of Oskaloosa, IA, brother Matt (Brenda) Shelman of Burlington, IA, brother Nick (Rhonda) Shelman of Washington, IA, six grandchildren, Dustin Vaughn, Zach Rouse, Alex Vaughn, Blake Vaughn, Caleb Shelman, Ryan Shelman and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Visitation will be held from 9-11AM on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City with the funeral service to follow at 11AM. Interment will be at the Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty immediately following the service.

Memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice.
