Lois was born on December 20, 1936 in Montevideo, Minnesota to Rev. J. Wesley and Bertha (Marlow) Johnston. After graduating from Worthington High School, she attended Kirkwood Community College. Lois worked as a home health aide for a few years before becoming a longtime greeter at Wal-Mart; a job she dearly loved as Lois has always been an outgoing, people-person.

In 1956, Lois married Garrett Heins and to this union, two children were born. The couple farmed between Atkins and Palo, Iowa but they later divorced.

Lois enjoyed shopping, spending time with her family and caring for animals, especially her dogs. She was a proud community supporter (and Olympic supporter), a devout Methodist and a member of “The Lois Club.”

Lois is survived by her daughters: Cheryl Smith and Lynae Heins (Clarence Gubbels) and grandson, Wesley Towne, all of Cedar Rapids; her sister, Celeste (Bob) Lane of Minnesota and a sister-in-law, Julie Johnston of Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: Marlow (Maria) Johnston of California and Lee Johnston of Illinois as well as a special family friend, Ralph Coblentz.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family c/o Lynae Heins.
