James “Jim” Harold Weno passed away at his home in Solon on November 30, 2022.

As per his wishes, there will be a private graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville, following cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa.

Jim was born to Ida (Pirkl) and Louis Weno on February 15, 1938. Jim was the youngest of four children born to Ida and Louis. He was raised on a farm near Iowa City and graduated from University High School in Iowa City, Iowa in May 1956.

Jim was drafted into the Army in 1961 and served in Hawaii and South Asia until 1963. After his discharge, he completed a term in the Army Reserves from 1963-1967. During that time, Jim returned to Iowa City to help out on the family farm. In addition, he worked as a salesman for Linder Tire Service for 49 years and retired in 2006.

Jim loved children and was a fun-loving uncle to his many nephews and nieces, but he did not have children of his own until he met the love of his life in the late 1970s. Jim married Wilma “Jean” (Gleason) Perdue on April 28, 1979, and finally got the big family that he so wanted, four step-kids, their spouses and several much-adored grandkids. Some of his favorite times were spent as “Papa” to his grandkids, as reflected in his license plate “MEMEPA.”

Along with his love of family, Jim had a great love for trout fishing and scenic drives in Northeast Iowa. He and his brother Ed probably knew every trout stream from Decorah to Lansing. It is said he and his brother had some favorite gambling spots, too.

Sadly, Jim lost his wife Jean in 2010. After he was widowed, Jim continued to spend time with family and friends, fishing (with occasional visits to the casinos), and watching Iowa football and wrestling. He met a former Iowa wrestler around this time, and the two became great friends. Jim had the opportunity to visit Mike in Colorado and Montana and spoke fondly of those adventures. Along with his family, Jim was blessed with a number of other good friends and neighbors, who were there to help him out during his later years. Jim and his lifelong friend, Glenn, found many small-town restaurants throughout eastern Iowa on their frequent scenic drives; and more recently he enjoyed his trips to the Res to watch the fishermen.

Jim will be best remembered for his quick jokes and laughter.

Jim is survived by his stepchildren Rodney (Lisa) Perdue of West Liberty, IA, Clayton Perdue of West Branch, IA, Regina Conn of Little Rock, AR, and Carole (Jeff Reese) Perdue of Iowa City, IA, his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, his sister-in-law Jane Weno; his many nephews and nieces; Mike Zaddick, Glenn Shima, Barb Mickelson, and numerous friends.

James was preceded in death by his wife Jean, his parents Ida and Louis, his brother John and sister-in-law Margaret (Peg) Weno, his brother Edward Weno, his sister Mary Ann (Weno) Blossfeld and brother-in-law John Blossfeld, Sr.
