David Yerkes, 33, of 1622 Muscatine Avenue in Iowa City, died Monday, August 15, 2005 from complications of diabetes.

David’s body has been cremated. A memorial service is planned for the 2nd weekend in September at Hickory Hill Park in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Johnson County Chapter.
Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

David Lawrence Yerkes was born June 8, 1972, at the US Air Force Hospital in Ankara, Turkey, the son of Lawrence & Barbara (Hogan) Yerkes. He was a 1990 graduate of Iowa City High School where he was a member of the cross-country team. David graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, in 1994, where he earned a degree in English and won the English Department’s Senior Writing prize. He was also a National Merit Scholar.

During high school, David worked at the Dodge Street Eagle’s Food Store. He later worked for Moore Business Forms, Mercy Hospital, ACT, and NCS / Pearson. A talented musician, he played the acoustic guitar brilliantly and was a passionate interpreter of Bob Dylan’s music. David worked bravely to cope with schizophrenia and diabetes. Enormously well read and well informed, David also loved to fish and to be alone in the out of doors.

David is survived by his parents, Lawrence & Barbara Yerkes of Iowa City, and was the proud, affectionate and devoted brother of Jennifer Yerkes & her husband Jean-Philippe Beinert of Strasbourg, France, Ellen Yerkes & her fiancé Donald Kotler of Portland, Oregon, and Anne Larson & her husband Kip, also of Portland; the fond uncle of Tomi & Leo Beinert and Evelyn Larson; loving grandson of Beverly Hogan of Minneapolis.

He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins & friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert D. & Armorella Yerkes, and his maternal grandfather, David Hogan.
