Mary “Joyce” Amelon, 81, of Oxford, passed away on October 2, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospital.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Interment will be held at a later date.
Joyce was born on February 2, 1941 in Iowa City to Ivan and Mary (Driscoll) Kaefring. After attending Cosgrove High School, where she excelled at varsity basketball, Joyce worked as a bank officer at Hawkeye State Bank for several years. She then worked as an office manager for Bon Aire Mobile Home Lodge before retiring in 2015.
Joyce married Earl “Duane” Amelon on September 6, 1958 while he was serving in the Air Force. They lived in Orlando, Florida while he served his first four years in the service. To this union, four children were born.
In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed playing golf and participating in the Williamsburg Women’s League, fishing (especially in remote lakes in Ontario, Canada), playing guitar and singing at local festivals and spending her winters in Florida. She especially enjoyed her family and was an avid hunter. Joyce would often bow hunt deer locally and would also venture to British Colombia, Canada and to Wyoming to hunt mule deer, elk and antelope. She also went brown bear hunting in Russia.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Duane; four sons: Dave (Leanne), Jeff (Marge), Doug (Rose) and John (Cheri) Amelon; brothers: Fred, Ray, Robert, Frank and Dean Kaefring; sisters: Kathy Stockman, Margaret Long and Theresa Swenka as well as her sister-in-law, Joan Collins, 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: Gerry and Ronnie Kaefring and twin great grandsons: William and Edward Amelon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion in Oxford or to St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove and online condolences may be shared at www.lensingfuneral.com
