Born September 9, 1934 in Iowa City, the daughter of J. Wendell and Lilah (Coats) Thomas, Mary Ann grew up in Iowa City, graduating from Iowa City High School. She received her Bachelors of Nursing degree from the University of Iowa.

Mary Ann spent her career as a homemaker and also working as a registered nurse at both the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Mercy Hospital. After her retirement, she continued her nursing career as a volunteer at the Free Medical Clinic in Iowa City.

Mary Ann was united in marriage to Robert Sladek on December 27, 1956 in Iowa City. Together, they raised four children, Jim, Tom, Liz and Dan. Robert died in 1992. Mary Ann met and later married Richard Park on December 28, 1996 in Iowa City. Richard died in 2018.

She was a long time member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, later attending St. Mary Catholic Church. Anyone who knew Mary Ann knew she loved caring for things. Be it her gardens, children, friendships, or pets, she had a knack for tending to things. She enjoyed time with her family, genealogy, gardening, traveling, and time spent on or near the water.

Mary Ann is survived by her children, Jim Sladek (Joselia), Tom Sladek and Liz Crooks (Mark), all of Iowa City and Dan Sladek (Marion) of Musselburgh, Scotland; grandchildren, Ann Young (Gabe), Robert Sladek (Carrie), Joe Crooks, Jack Crooks, Mae Crooks, Conrad Sladek, Addison Sladek and Jacob Sladek; great-grandchildren, James Sladek, Lane Sladek, Olivia Sladek, Levi Young, Lila Young, Luke Young and Liam Young.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and a daughter Jane Sladek.

Instead of flowers and plants, Mary Ann’s wishes were to recognize the first responders who saved her life 10 years ago. Memorials can be directed to the Mary Ann Sladek Park Memorial Fund.
