Michael F. (Mick) Camp passed away peacefully on September 19, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mick donated his body to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa, and no services are planned at this time.

Mick was born to Frederick J. and Vera (Peck) Camp on January 22, 1936 in Independence, Iowa. He spent his childhood living in Independence, Okoboji, and Des Moines. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High in Des Moines and attended the University of Iowa where he became a devoted Hawkeye fan, a devotion that lasted right up to his last few days.

Mick moved to Iowa City in 1967 to work with his father at Towncrest Mobile Home Court. He sold new mobile homes for many years. After the sale of the family business, he founded Camp Properties and continued providing rentals until retiring in 2020. Mick had a great love for people. He treated his tenants to tremendous acts of kindness and compassion.

Mick’s great love for boating and fishing grew from his childhood experiences. He, his brothers, and two best friends had numerous adventures, sometimes misadventures, trying to catch the ever elusive “big one.” The many boats in his fleet displayed the depth of his love for the water. Just one boat never seemed to be enough for him. When not on a trip, he enjoyed relaxing on his houseboat or at his cabin on the Mississippi.

Mick was always excited to contribute to studies at the University of Iowa. One of his proudest moments was having a picture of his tooth published in a textbook after participating in a trial of a new filling material. Most recently he was part of a study of a new cancer treatment. He took pride in knowing it would help others. All in all, he was always placing himself last on the list because his heart was most full when he put others first.

Mick was preceded in death by his parents, his big brother Jack, brother in-law Dick Woods, and his two lifelong fishing buddies Jim Reed and Tom VanHon.

Those left to cherish his memory are his cherished companion Marj Willey; sons Michael (Lisa) Camp of Des Moines and Geoffrey (Ann) Camp of Tampa, FL; sister Pat Woods of Des Moines; brother Dan (Rita) Camp of Plymouth, MN; grandchildren Maryjane (Cowen) Hames, Rob and Justin Holub; great grandchild Cordelia Young; many nieces and nephews, and friends.
