On Tuesday July 12, 2022, Benjamin Niles Peters (27), ended his long and tortuous war with mental illness that took the form of depression and schizophrenia.

Ben was a 2013 graduate of Iowa City High School a 2018 graduate of the University of Iowa. He was a kind, gentle, and giving person, who loved nature with barefoot hikes through the woods. He took in two cats that he nurtured and loved to good health. Ben contributed to the homeless and charities when he was at his lowest and had little for himself.

Ben was creative, thoughtful, and sincere. In his free time, he was an artist, enjoying making music, pen and ink drawings, and graphic novels. He drew from his experience with mental health for inspiration. We are sad that we will not get to read his Sci-Fi novel on mind control that he intended to write in the blended style of Phillip K. Dick and Kurt Vonnegut. He truly enjoyed cooking, too, with a bend toward delicious, spicy vegetarian.

Mental illness ravages the best in our society. For Ben it hit at the end of high school and really took hold during his college years. His illness robbed him of his full life and us of sharing it with him.

He was a loved son, brother, and friend. We know that Ben is now at peace. His family will celebrate his life with a private ceremony. Friends are encouraged to share a memory of Ben.
