Joshua Thomas Frederick Engel, age 34, of Iowa City, died on July 11, 2022.

A committal service with Military Honors will be at 11:00 am on Friday, July 29, 2022, at Rock Island National Cemetery in Moline, IL, officiated by Rev. Thomas Engel.

To attend the service, please meet in the parking lot of the Wyndham Hotel Moline on John Deere Commons (1415 River Drive, Moline IL 61265) at 10:15am, and we will depart for the cemetery promptly at 10:45 am. Following the committal service, family and friends will celebrate Josh at the Crawford Brew Works (3659 Devils Glen Rd, Bettendorf, IA 52722) around 12:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward the memorial fund for Josh’s daughter, Caroline, in care of Courtney Engel (Henn) or Elizabeth Floyd.

Josh was born on July 8, 1988, in Libertyville, IL, the son of Elizabeth Floyd (Engel).

He attended Fillmore Elementary, Wood Intermediate, and North High School in Davenport, Iowa.

Josh enlisted in the US Army in 2006. He served as an Infantryman in combat, Iraq, 2009. Josh was highly decorated and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Metal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (second award), and Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB). Josh received many service commendations and medals including a Bronze Star.

He graduated with an Associate of Science at Kirkwood and was in the process of getting a bachelor’s degree at the University of Iowa. He was highly recognized as a leader and attained management positions at his places of employment.

Josh enjoyed raising his daughter Caroline and getting ice cream together. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He inherited the Engel gift of woodworking creating beautiful American Flags and furniture. He liked listening to podcasts, especially the Steve Deace show. He liked to relax watching TV series and documentaries. He was passionate about sharing new discoveries from Black Rifle Coffee, new health supplements, or an encouraging word. He was always willing to help, like buying a new phone for his mom or hanging a picture for his sister. Josh was a fun-loving guy. Whenever he was around, you could count on getting a good laugh. He also didn’t mind a deep discussion on the latest issues.

Josh is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Floyd (Engel) of Red Level, AL; grandmother, Lorraine Engel; daughter, Caroline of Iowa City; sister, Courtney Engel of Grayslake, IL; former spouse Courtney Engel (Henn), of Iowa City, and numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by grandfather, Fred Engel; uncle, Fred Engel; and close friend and veteran, Jason Pautsch, who served and died in Iraq.
