Susan Kay (Stimmel) Steele, 81, of Lone Tree passed away at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on June 22, 2022.

A memorial gathering for friends and family will be held Tuesday, June 28, 2022 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. Private burial will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to her family to be distributed to organizations that were important to Susan.

Susan was born June 26, 1940, in Iowa City, Iowa to Earl and Frances (Brown) Stimmel. She grew up in Iowa City and graduated from City High School. She went on to get her cosmetology license in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she began working as a beautician at The Roosevelt Hotel. Sue got married and spent the early years raising their three children, Susie, Jim and Tracy in North Liberty, Iowa, before the couple divorced.

After her children were old enough, she began working at Taco Grande in Iowa City and eventually became the restaurant manager. Sue then worked at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a housekeeper for 18 years, until her health no longer permitted her to work.

She moved to Lone Tree after meeting her soul mate, George Herring, whom she spent 18 memorable years with before he passed away from cancer in 2011.

Sue enjoyed time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading, playing bingo and going to the casino, especially to play slots.

She is survived by her children Sue “Susie” Steele of Coralville, Jim Steele of North Liberty, and Tracy (David) Finke of North Liberty; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother and several nieces and nephews. Sue touched many lives and became a second Mom to many.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters Sandra Huedepohl and Sara Myrick; and her significant other George.
