Richard A. “Dick” Jones, 68, of Iowa City, died Saturday, August 6, 2005, peacefully, in the place that he felt most comfortable, his home.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday at the Welsh Congregational Church. The Reverend Nancy F. English, former pastor at the Welsh Church, will officiate. Private burial will be in the Welsh Church Pioneer Cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Welsh Congregational Church Preservation Fund.

Richard was born August 17, 1936 in Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Eldon and Helen (Lawson)
Jones. He had attended the University of Iowa and was a 1958 graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago.

Richard moved to Iowa City and was a funeral director. He owned and operated Beckman-Butherus-Jones Funeral Home in Iowa City until 1979. He then opened the “Wood Clinic” in North Liberty, a furniture refinishing business. For nineteen years he was a hospital mortician at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, retiring in 1998.

Richard was a longtime member of the Welsh Congregational Church, the Central Iowa Garden Railway Society and assisted in publishing the Railway Newsletter. He was a past member of the Iowa Funeral Director’s Association.

Richard was gifted at creating stain glass windows and other objects. He enjoyed his motorcycle on which he had traveled throughout the United States, but his great love was garden railroading.

He is survived by his partner, Marshal Childs of Iowa City;
two daughters, Melissa Lynn Jones and L. Michelle Jones, both of Iowa City;
six grandchildren, Molly, Joshua and Jacob Cambridge

Justin and Emily Jones;
one great granddaughter, Madison Jo;
aunt, Frances Mitchell of Portland, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Brian in 2001 and his former wife Priscilla.
