Donald Richard McChristy, 88, died peacefully on Saturday, May 28, 2022 surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM, Friday, June 3, 2022 at St. Wenceslaus Church with Father Gary Beckman officiating. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM, Thursday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 PM. Burial with Military Honors will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Donald McChristy Memorial Fund has been established.

Don was born January 29, 1934 in Monticello, the son of Marcus and Anna (Egger) McChristy. He was a graduate of Monticello High School and served in the US Army in Germany with the 8th Infantry. On September 27, 1958 Don married the love of his life Bernadine Dehner in Cascade.

In 1962, Don and Bernadine “Pete” moved to Iowa City from Anamosa. Don was employed at Northwestern Bell where he began as a linesman and retired as a supervisor. Following retirement, he was employed in telecommunications at UIHC.
Don was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and Telephone Pioneers. He was an avid Hawkeye and Cardinal fan, loved feeding the birds, and especially enjoyed his yorkie, Cuddles.

Don is survived by his wife, Bernadine “Pete”; their three children and five grandchildren, Debra Henderson of Iowa City and daughter, Cherisa, Donnie (Mary) McChristy of North Liberty and children, Kelli (Erik) Ballard and Kayci (Adam) Prybil, and Diann McChristy Zirtzman and children, Anna and Daniel; three great-grandchildren, Rohan, CaShya, and RoZay; sister-in-law, Mary Ann McChristy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Gerald and Marjorie.
