Leland Lavern Wright, 87, of Iowa City, and formerly of Bettendorf, passed away Monday, May 23, 2022 at Legacy Gardens in Iowa City.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 11:30 am at Rose Hill Cemetery in Menlo, Iowa. Following the services, friends are invited to join the family at the Menlo Community Building for refreshments.
Instead of flowers or plants, memorials may be directed to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, (curealzfund.org)

Born August 29, 1934 in Adair County, Iowa, the son of Kenneth Max and Minnie Rosina (Lager) Wright, Leland grew up in the Menlo area and graduated from Menlo High School in 1953, where he served as class president. He worked to put himself through college, graduating from Northwest Missouri State College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

Leland met and later, on April 23, 1961, married the love of his life, Roberta Marlene Bentley in Gilbert, Iowa. The couple were married for over 50 years.

Residing in Bettendorf since 1969, Leland worked as an auditor at the Rock Island Arsenal for 23 years, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed the annual family summer vacations, the travels of which took them all over the United States. Leland was a dedicated reader of history and especially of WWII.

Providing for his family was of utmost important to Leland and he was extremely proud of his two grandchildren.

In 2020, Leland moved to Iowa City to be closer to family.

Survivors include his daughter, Kimberlee Wingert (Philip) of Coralville; grandson, Bentley Wingert of Boston, MA. and granddaughter, Hunter Bourjaily (John) of Denver, CO.; a brother, Dennis Wright (Jennie) of Mansfield, Texas, sister-in-law, Norma Wright of Pensacola, Florida and his significant other, Marles Moore of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Marion Johnson of Story City and brother-in-law, Gilbert (Charlotte) Bentley of Ames and many nieces and nephews.

Leland’s parents, his wife Roberta, a brother Wilbur, sister-in-law, Jan (Harry) Kalbach and brother-in-law, Gary Johnson preceded him in death.
