Joanne Louise (Henkelman) Staton, 73, of North Liberty, Iowa passed away suddenly at home on May 16, 2022, a few months after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 22, 2022, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 3:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 23, 2022, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service with Father Chuck Adam officiating. A luncheon will be held at The Eagles Club in Iowa City following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to her family to be distributed to organizations that were important to Joanne.

Joanne was born May 4, 1949, to Harold and Patricia (Krantz) Henkelman. Raised in Oxford with two brothers and a sister was anything but boring, but also gave her the gift of having three lifelong best friends. Joanne would later graduate from Clear Creek Amana High School.

Joanne was a devoted and loving mother first and foremost. She stayed busy at home doing what she loved most, raising her three children, Scott, Chris and Danielle. Joanne treasured her children and embraced every moment with them from the time they were born until her last breath. The only thing better than being a mother was becoming a grandma to Grace and Sean, and eventually a great grandma to Jordan.

Joanne met the love of her life, Mitch Turner and spent 14 loving, devoted and memorable years together up until her death. The couple always brought out the best in each other and made a perfect team.

Joanne was an avid Euchre player and enjoyed the friendships she made along the way. She also enjoyed thrift shopping and bird watching.

Joanne was a fiercely independent woman with a great sense of humor and took life for what it was, even at the darkest times. She faced every obstacle in life with courage, was soft-spoken unless needed to be heard, and genuinely enjoyed any moment surrounded by her family, including her nieces and nephews that she loved like her own and most importantly, her best friend, confidant and sister, Therese.

Joanne lost a part of her when her daughter died in 2018 and all though her love and laughter will be missed by all, we are comforted to know she is reunited with her beautiful daughter Dani Waechter. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

To truly understand how special she was to all of us she leaves behind, our family not only lists names but also a short remembrance from each of us to help understand just how special our mom, life partner, grandma, great-grandma, sister and aunt that she was to us:

Mother, I will never love another the way I love you. I can’t wait to be with you again.
-Love your son, Chris Ellis

To my mother, you are the most generous, unselfish woman, who always put her children’s needs above her own. I am grateful for having you as a mother, this world is a dimmer place without you in it. I will love you until my last breath, thank you for everything you’ve done for me.
-Your oldest son, Scotty Ellis

Joanne was the love of my life for 14 years, those 14 years we had small arguments, but we never fought. Every night when I came home from work, she was a breath of fresh air. I miss you terribly and love you most of all.
-Your soulmate, Mitch Turner

Mama, you took over my care when my first mama Dani passed away. You knew I needed special attention and lots of TLC which you gave freely. I’ll see you in puppy heaven.
-Love your fur baby, Foxy

Sis, I miss you so much it hurts to even breathe. We spent so much time together doing all the things we loved, shopping, dining, and playing euchre. I miss your humor, talking endlessly on the phone, and your beautiful smile. I can only find peace in knowing he will not suffer late stages of cancer and that you are with loved ones that have gone before you, especially mom and dad and your precious girl Dani. My sweet sister, my friend, I’ll hold you in my heart until we meet again, until then I’m going alone… Stay in the truck.
-Love Sis, Therese Schebler

When I was going to the University of Iowa to become a pharmacist, I was a pretty poor young student. Joanne always helped me financially and brought me cigarettes during that time. Thanks Sis!
-Your brother, Nick Henkelman

With Joanne and I only being 11 months apart in age we shared a lot of secrets. Like when we would sneak out the upstairs window at night and go to meet friends. One night we went to a local barn and shared some smokes on a hay mound. It caught on fire but thankfully we were able to put it out. Good memories Sis, I miss you and love you.
-Your brother, Steve Henkelman (wife, Gina Henkelman)

My favorite memories of grandma were when we would make each other laugh until it hurt… And she made the best mandarin orange cake!
-Love your granddaughter, Grace Ellis

Grandma Jo let me take her Audi to school dances to make me feel cool and boy did it. It always made me feel so special to drive her fancy car!
-Love your grandson, Sean Ellis (wife, Kendra Ellis)

One day when great grandma Jo was driving me to City High, she claimed she did not see a large speed bump. We hit that mountain at 40 miles an hour! It made us both bounce out of our seats. She was so surprised by it and said… Now where the heck did that come from? (She gave me a ride to school every day for three months by the way) I said Grandma Jo, how did you not see that speed bump? It was bigger than you are. We both laughed and she told me to have a great day and she would see me tomorrow morning. I always remember those drives to school.
-Love your great-grandson, Jordan Ellis

Aunt Joanne, we shared many laughs together. I loved playing games and Euchre with you. Thanks for always bringing the humor and smiles and of course the mandarin orange cake! I miss you and love you!
-Love your niece, Amanda Petersen

Growing up I remember Joanne being the cool aunt. She lived her life like there was no speed limit and enjoyed everything it had to offer.
-Love your nephew, Joey Henkelman

Joanne was a wonderful sister-in-law. I love books about cats, and she would always send me a book with wonderful cat stories for my birthday or Christmas. I love you. I will miss you terribly JoannEEEE!
-Love your sister-in-law, Suzie Henkelman

She is also survived by two additional nephews, Mike Henkelman and Cris Bulten; three additional nieces Tonya Bulten, Lisa Betts and Catie Henkelman; Mitch’s children and their families, and many friends.

We would love to hear memories or words of love of our beloved Joanne and encourage you to share them on the tribute wall or at the visitation.
