NEGRO CIVIL WAR VET DIES
George W. Patterson, 96, Lived in Iowa City for Past Seventy Years

Almost 100 years old, a colored veteran of the Civil war, Mr. George W. Patterson, passed away at the home of his son, Samuel, after a protracted illness of several month's duration. The end came at 12:15 shortly after midnight Friday.

Mr. Patterson was 96 years one month and 20 days old and had lived in Iowa City more than 70 years, unbrokenly, save as to his service in the Union army, where he proved himself a brave defender of the flag that made his people free. He was a member of the Kirkwood Post. No. 8, Iowa City.
Surviving are his brother, James H. Patterson, of Kansas City; and three sons.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 from the Harmon funeral parlors.
