James E. Broadston, 91, of Coralville, passed away on January 1, 2022 at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.
Private graveside services with military honors will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City at 2:00pm on January 5th, 2022, and a Memorial Mass will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Jim was born on October 11, 1930 in Montezuma to Christopher and Bess (Williams) Broadston. Following graduation from Franklin High School, Jim proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following discharge, Jim attended both the University of Iowa and Coe Colleges majoring in engineering. He worked at the University of Iowa as the Head of the Environmental Engineering Department for several years until retirement.
Jim was very active in his community. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus (3rd Degree) and Kiwanis. He was former President of the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Cedar Rapids and belonged to the Holy Name Society. Jim also belonged to the Cedar Rapids Mayor’s Committee on Human Rights, was the co-founder for the Council on Human Relations and a National Right to Life member. He sat on the Cedar Rapids Home Builder’s Association, the Cedar Rapids Junior Chamber of Commerce and the NAACP. Above all of these accomplishments, Jim was most proud of his family.
Jim is survived by his children, Belinda McCoy, Melissa Warhurst, Christopher Kasselder, Christian Broadstone and wife Amy Sung, Erin Broadston-Irvine, and Peter Broadstone and wife Courtney, and also by his grandchildren Marin, William, Harrison, Madeline, Gavin, Charlotte, and Emilia. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia Berg and his daughter Erin’s husband, John Irvine.
