Florence was born February 23, 1917 at home in rural Richmond, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Celeste Kos Kern. On November 28, 1936 she married Robert A. “Pode” Droll at St. Joseph’s Church in Hills. He died on October 29, 1990.

Florence, better known as Flossie too many, and her husband were longtime residents of Hills, where they owned and operated Droll’s Tap and farmed for many years.

Florence was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, where she served as an extraordinary minister, assisted Father Lou with communion distribution at Atrium Village, and coordinated funeral dinners. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the Elks Club, Ladies of the Moose, Eagles Auxiliary, I-Club, Friends Club at Hills Bank, the Hills Town and Country Club and a charter member of the Hills Fireflies. Florence volunteered for many projects in the Hills community over the years and also helped to feed the hungry at the Wesley House and serve lunch at Hills Elementary School.

Florence gave generously of her time to others, but her family was always first and foremost. She enjoyed cooking, baking, working in her garden and traveling, especially with her beloved Hawkeyes to out of town games and on Hawkeye cruises. Her energetic spirit and sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew her.

In 1996 Florence received the Hills Town and Country Club Community Award for her contribution to community affairs and in 2004 was honored by the same organization by receiving the Elmer Draker Outstanding Achievement Award.

Florence is survived by her children, Bob (Judi) Droll of Davenport and their children Robert (RJ) Droll and Leia Droll, Gary (Elizabeth) Droll of Conifer, Colorado and their son Gary F. Droll, Pam (Lynn) Schnoebelen of West Branch and children Derrick (Rick) Miller and Tia Miller, Lori Droll of Hills, a special niece who Robert and Flossie help to raise, Marilyn Michel Knebel; four great grandchildren, Derrick and Anna Miller and Brendan and Bethanne Droll; two step grandchildren, Erica and Logan Schnoebelen; one step great grandchild, Trevor Port; one adopted brother Robert J. Kern of Iowa City and numerous nieces and nephews.
