Richard Wayne Nelson, 84, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Clinton, passed away December 15, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Per his wishes no public services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercy Foundation- Hospice of Mercy, 701 10th St. SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52403.
Richard was born on February 11, 1937, in Clinton, Iowa to Harold and Helen (Rosenbaum) Nelson. He married Mary Shaw on November 10, 1956 in Clinton, Iowa, where they would eventually raise their four children. The couple worked hard to provide for their children, and enjoyed 61-memorable years of marriage until she passed away in 2018.
Richard was a longtime employee at Elmwood Dairy and ADM in Clinton, retiring in 1999. He then started working part-time at Hy-Vee in the dairy department in Clinton. After moving to North Liberty in 2003, he began working at the Hy-Vee in Coralville, where he worked until retiring in 2017.
Richard enjoyed camping and fishing, but most of all he loved time spent with his family. He never took life too seriously, had a great sense of humor and was always ready to give anyone a hard time but if you knew him, you knew it was only out of love. Richard even made sure to tease his doctors, up until his death which is just the way he would have wanted to leave us.
Richard is survived by four children, Kara Nelson of Cumming, GA, Kathy Hilmo of Asheville, NC, Michael (Jackie) Nelson of Clinton, IA, and Matthew (Karen) Nelson of Walford, IA; five grandchildren, Tye Hilmo, Ross Hilmo, Rachel Nelson, Elliott Nelson and Daniel Nelson; two brothers David (Judy) Nelson and Harold Nelson Jr., and his beloved cat Minnie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, his grandson Austin and sister-in-law Rita Nelson.
