Joan Couch, 84, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2021 at The Birdhouse- Hospice Home of Johnson County.

Private family services will be held Monday November 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with private burial at Rock Island National Cemetery. The service will be live streamed, and the zoom link may be found under the Tribute Wall on Joan’s obituary page at www.lensingfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Joan was born on June 25, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois to Walter and Mary (Mickel) Trapp. She attended grade school in Portland, Oregon and resided there until 1950 when her family moved back to the Midwest. Joan graduated from high school in 1954 and attended the Airline Academy in Omaha, Nebraska. She began working for Western Union in Chicago before marrying Richard Groom. The couple had three daughters before later divorcing.

She then began working for the State of Iowa as a job counselor and secretary in Davenport and Des Moines. Joan married Charles Couch in 1986 in Des Moines. The couple moved to Lincoln City, Oregon in 1989, and moved back to the Midwest in 2001, settling in Iowa City until the time of her death.

Joan took the Master Gardener course in 2005 and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, reading novels and cookbooks, and spending time with her family. Joan was devoted to her husband Charles and cared for him when he became ill up until his death in 2017.

She was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City, Red Hat Society, and Four Seasons Garden Club.

She is survived by two daughters Dawn (Rick) Pruter of Iowa City, IA, and Kathy (Glen Jones) Groom-Jones of Iowa City, IA; three grandsons Nic (Stacy) Pruter of Coralville, IA, Luke (Brittnee) Pruter of Iowa City, IA, and Jacob Jones of Littleton, CO; four great-grandchildren Emerson, Jett, Wesley and Aubree Pruter; two siblings Mary Phillips and Eugene (Florisa) Trapp, both of Oregon, and a sister-in-law Johnna Trapp of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Chuck Couch; daughter Lana Groom in June 2021; two siblings Charlotte Johnson and Walter Trapp, and brother-in-law Robert Phillips.
