Gary Alan Greenwalt, 71, died peacefully Thursday, November 25, 2021.

Graveside committal with Military Honors will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville with Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holden Comprehensive Center c/o University of Iowa Foundation, 1 W. Park Rd, Iowa City, IA 52242.

Gary was born January 5,1950 in Litchfield, IL, the son of Alan and Athel (Williams) Greenwalt. He was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, where he received a master’s degree in education. On August 22, 1970 Gary married Donna Downes at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, IL.

Gary served in the US Air Force for 21 years (during the Vietnam and Iraq era). He retired in 1992 with the rank of Major. Following retirement Gary was employed with the Rapid City, SD Community Schools. Gary and Donna lived in Rapid City for 23 years. In 2012 they moved to Coralville to be closer to their daughter and her family.

Time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, was most important to Gary. He enjoyed puzzles and liked to read.

Gary is survived by his wife Donna, and their daughter, Christine (Joseph) Hillberry of Iowa City and their children, Timothy and Katelynn; his sister, Lisa (Clinton) McGlothlin of Springfield, IL; sister-in-law, Hollie Greenwalt of Litchfield, IL; and nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Timothy Edward; and brothers, Steve Dale and Edward Ray.
