Goldene (“Goldie”) Braverman Haendel, born March 4th, 1936, passed away on Nov 15, 2021 at 11:20 am in Iowa City. Goldie grew up in Iowa City, the daughter of the late Aaron and Faye Braverman and sister of Kent Braverman. Following her marriage to Richard Haendel, they had two children, Melissa Anne Haendel and Erica Stephanie Haendel.

Goldie grew up in her father’s grocery store, a central fixture of the Iowa City community. Her passion for all things food meant she knew every butcher and vegetable monger in town. In the 1980s, she started “Goldie’s Seafood Market” where she would fly fresh fish in from both coasts five times a week. Patrons would drive 200 miles from all over to come to the fish shop. Goldie also loved to travel, and the first thing she’d need to do anywhere in the world was to visit the grocery store to see what the community was eating and participate in their local food customs.

Goldie graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s in Criminology. She was an active member of the Iowa City Community Theatre, and greatly enjoyed the performing arts. Goldie was president of the Iowa City Hadassah and was a regular donor to Iowa City Hospice. She also ran “Goldie’s rentals,” a property management company that supported Iowa City residents and student housing needs for over twenty years.

A ceremony will be held at Agudas Achim Cemetery on Friday November 19th at 11 am, with a reception to follow at Agudas Achim Synagogue. Vaccination is required.

Goldie is survived by her husband Richard, daughters Melissa and Erica, son-in-laws John Campbell and William Yingling, two grandchildren Samuel Haendel and Madison Yingling, and four favorite nephews, Cordell Braverman, Joshua Braverman, Jeremy Braverman, and Karl Haendel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) Food Reservoir, Iowa City Hospice or Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
