James Kenneth Harney, 77, died peacefully Sunday, November 14, 2021.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Friday, November 19, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father Stephen Witt officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:30 to 7 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, the James Harney Memorial Fund has been established.

Jim was born January 3, 1944 in Johnson County, one of the fourteen children of Ambrose Francis and Rose Catherine (Roit) Harney. On August 18, 1964 Jim married Sandra Petru at St. Mary’ Church in Iowa City.

Following high school Jim farmed on the family farm for many years and was also a maintenance mechanic at the Thomas and Betts Company, until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City and Nichols. Jim was a lifelong resident of Iowa City, until moving to Nichols in 1989.

Jim is survived by his three children, Kenneth (Stacy) Harney of West Liberty, Stephen Harney of Iowa City, and Shari (Robert) Hillyer of Nichols, and Mark Love, whom he treated like a son; his siblings, Mary Ellen Dlouhy of Hills, Edmund Harney of Iowa City, David (Marianne) Harney of Solon, Patrick (Jean) Harney of Iowa City, Virginia (Dan) Ockenfels of Fairfax, Rosa (Gen) Langenberg of Iowa City; ten grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley, J.J., Lindsey, Kaylee, Jared, Jeffrey, Hannah, Wyatt, and Matthew; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Kaislyn; sisters-in-law, Betty Harney and Emily Harney; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2004; his siblings and their spouses, Francis (Leona), Vincent (Marguerite), Paul (Betty), Joe, Tom (Emily), Vivian (Jim) Clemen, Therese, Joyce, and Milo Dlouhy.
