Richard “Rich” W. Newkirk, 35, died Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at UIHC surrounded by his family of complications from COVID-19.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 7, 2021 from 2 to 5 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. The Family will have a private Service of Remembrance with Pastor Dr. James Coyle officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to an educational fund for Tristan, son of Rich and Stephany c/o Veridian Credit Union.
The family would appreciate that guests wear a mask.

Rich was born November 9, 1985, in Ottumwa, IA, the son of the late William Newkirk and Michelle (Pitt) McLeland. Rich was a graduate of West Burlington High School in 2004 and attended the University of Iowa.

On April 26, 2013, Rich married Stephany Coleman in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Rich was a prison guard at the Oakdale Classification Center, where he was employed since 2007. He was a firefighter with the North Liberty Fire Department for 11 years, retiring on October 1, 2021.

Rich was a true friend to all. He enjoyed time spent with friends playing video games, watching the Green Bay Packers, and woodworking. He especially loved time spent with the fire department, his family and his son, Tristan. He will be greatly missed.

Rich is survived by his loving wife, Stephany and their son, Tristan; his mother and step-father, Michelle and David McLeland of Salem, IA; siblings Cynthia Newkirk of Hendersonville, TN, James Newkirk of Ottumwa, Colby (Abbey) Newkirk of North Liberty, Samuel (Samantha) Newkirk of Burlington, Brock (Lauran) McLeland of Burlington, and Kami Waltz of Farmington, MN; maternal grandmothers, Linda Pitt of Shueyville and Judy Cousins of Burlington and paternal grandmother, Helen Newkirk of Petersburg, IN; grandparents, Joe and Marcia McLeland of Danville, IA and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, William; maternal grandfather, Duane Pitt and paternal grandfather, Dello Newkirk.
