Barbara Ziegler, 73, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2021 at Briarwood Care Center, with her loving husband, Joseph Ziegler, by her side.
Barbara was born on October 31, 1947 in Ft. Madison, Iowa to Bill and Virginia (Jones) Gaston. Following graduation from Ft. Madison High School in 1965, Barbara attended the University of Iowa where she majored in Russian and developed a deep appreciation for Russian literature. After graduating in 1969, Barbara worked as a freelance typist for a few years before starting her career at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She worked in the Department of Urology, providing a broad range of administrative support for over 40 years. When she retired in 2013, she was a recognized expert in the grant writing process, helping to bring in millions of research dollars to the community. During retirement, Barbara harnessed some of those same organizational and writing skills while volunteering generously with CommUnity Crisis Services & Food Bank and the Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa.
During her years as a University of Iowa student, she met Joseph Ziegler, originally of Toledo, Ohio. The two married at the Danforth Chapel in Iowa City on November 2, 1969, and then settled permanently and happily in Iowa City.
In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed gardening, cooking, crocheting, needlepoint, and creating beautiful origami projects. She loved being outdoors with the vegetables growing in her large garden.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Joe; sister, Bonnie Scott; nieces: Cindy and Terry and a nephew, Russell. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Jeff (Libby) Ziegler along with their children: Joe, Phil and Jane. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, David Scott.
Per Barbara’s request, cremation has been accorded and a memorial event may be scheduled at a later time. Online condolences may be shared at www.lensingfuneral.com and memorials may be made to CommUnity Crisis Services & Food Bank or the Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa.
The family wishes to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to Dr. Richard Larew and the staff at Briarwood Care Center for the love and exceptional care you showed Barbara and her family during this difficult time.
