Albert chose to be cremated. His family will greet friends Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A Memorial Service to Celebrate His Life will then be held at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be held Tuesday at 10:00 am at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville with military graveside rites provided by the Coralville American Legion. The family will host a luncheon following the burial at the Coralville Legion. The family request that in lieu of flowers that memorials be directed to the Albert Barnes Memorial Fund.

Al was married to the former Doris Meade of Cosgrove for almost 60 years. He worked various jobs during his life but found most satisfaction as a professional truck driver. He truly enjoyed being out on the highway and had many stories to tell. He enjoyed golf (and was very proud of his hole-in-one plaque from Hi-Point) and playing cards. He also farmed in Johnson County and served as a Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy in the 1960’s. Al was an avid Hawkeye fan, as well as enjoying watching most types of sporting events.

Al served in the US Navy during WWII and was a member of Coralville American Legion Walter Johnson Post #721.

Al will be missed by his wife Doris; his children, Al Barnes, Jr. & his companion Lori of Tiffin, John & his wife Twila of Iowa City, Bonnie McFarland & her husband Terry of Iowa City, Jim & his wife Jan of Coralville, Deb Rogers & her husband Bob of rural Iowa City and Kevin & his wife Lisa of Iowa City; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Al was preceded in death by his parents.
