Karen Elaine Christensen, 78, of Coralville, IA, formerly of Denison, IA, passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at her home. A visitation will be held from 4-6 PM, Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, IA. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at 11AM following a visitation from 9:30-11:00 AM both at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 500 N 24th St., Denison, IA. Lunch will be served at the church following the service. Burial will be in the Nishnabotna Cemetery after the luncheon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Our Savior Lutheran Church; Parkview Church, Iowa City; or Samaritan’s Purse.

Karen was born on February 6, 1943, in Denison, IA, the daughter of Alvin and Dorothy Wiese Kutschinski. She was baptized into faith and later confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak. She grew up in Charter Oak and attended Hanover and Berne country schools with her mother as her teacher. Karen graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1960 and married Norman D. Christensen on June 4, 1961, at St. John Lutheran Church; he preceded her in death on November 12, 1999.

Karen and Norman worked side-by-side on their family farm south of Denison. She enjoyed all aspects of agriculture, from farrowing, discing, hauling grain, to running for parts for repairs. Karen took odd jobs, too, working at the NASDA extension office during the farm crisis of the 80’s, cleaning office buildings at night and farming during the day. She even started a Bed and Bird for pheasant hunters in 1988. Karen was also blessed to serve her church in many ways including teaching Sunday School for over 40 years.

After her son Scot died on April 8, 1988, she joined Compassionate Friends serving as an editor. Karen was very thankful for her time spent with her grandchildren attending their different events, but especially dinners together. Karen believed in Jesus Christ with all her heart and soul and lived to serve Him and others in a variety of ways. She may not be with us now, but we know she’s with her Lord.

Karen is survived by her son, Greg (Kim) Christensen of Coralville, three grandchildren, James, Jordan, and Elle; her sister, Linda (Allen) Nepper of Charter Oak, IA; many extended families and a myriad of friends. Karen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman; and son, Scot.

The family would like to thank Lensing and Pauley Jones funeral homes and the Churches for their help at this time.
