Lana Jane Groom, 58, of Iowa City passed away June 2, 2021 at Country View Senior Living in North Liberty, Iowa, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease for more than 5 years.

Lana was born May 25, 1963 in Davenport, Iowa to Richard and Joan Groom. At the young age of four years old, she owned her first horse. From then on, she competed in many horse shows in Donahue, Iowa. She earned a whole trunk full of trophies and blue ribbons in Speed, Rescue and Barrel Racing. Lana was even chosen Queen of the Horse Show.

After graduating from Davenport West High School, she was accepted into the Veterinarian Program at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She studied for a total of 10 years to be a horse surgeon and large animal veterinarian. She practiced in Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin and Colorado for a career of 26 years. After three serious concussions, she changed to small animal practice which she did for another two years before being diagnosed with Dementia.

Lana was dedicated to her role as a Veterinarian but made many friends throughout her career and always kept in touch with them no matter how many miles apart. She had a special place in her heart for animals, especially her four border collies, Nellie, Dixie, Shiner and Tillie, all champion runners in fly ball competitions. While living in Cedar Rapids, she belonged to the Hawkeye Hustlers for many years and won several ribbons and trophies.

Above all other things, Lana’s family was everything to her. They are grateful that she is at peace after enduring such a cruel disease but will miss her for the talented and loving daughter, sister and aunt she was.

Lana is survived by her father, Richard (Donna) Groom of Davenport, IA; her mother Joan Couch of Iowa City, IA; two beloved sisters, Dawn (Rick) Pruter of Iowa City, IA, and Kathy (Glen Jones) Groom-Jones of Colorado; nephews, Nic (Stacy) Pruter, Luke (Brittnee) Pruter, and Jacob Jones, and 3 great nephews and one great niece.

Honoring her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family to be used for a memorial bench at the Lilly Pond in Amana.
