Allan “Al” Young passed away April 28, 2021 at UIHC at the age of 74.

To celebrate his life, a gathering for friends and family will be held on Sunday May 2, 2021 from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to his family to be distributed to organizations that were important to Al.

Allan L. Young was born on July 19, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Irvin Tyler John Young and Ruth Marian (Bryan) Young. He was a middle child: older (Leanna Palmer) and younger (Irvetta Voelkl) sisters.

Al was a husband, father, grandfather, UI graduate, HR specialist at the University of Iowa, an Iowa City police officer, Vietnam veteran, (Bronze Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry). At one time or another he was also a pilot, parachutist, calligrapher, photographer, 32nd degree Mason, Optimist, golfer, ballroom dancer, and an avid traveler.

His quest for knowledge could occupy many hours when he could have been doing something else, perhaps something more constructive, something more productive. In his later years he tried to be less self-serving and more giving and helping toward others. He often left a trail of quotes and trappings written in his own developed style of calligraphy on index cards, bookmarks, and framed items consistent with his flavor of spirituality and presence of a Higher Power. He also tried new and interesting endeavors like helping to cook, clean, listen, laundry, and writing his own obituary.

Allan is survived by his wife Barbara (Barb) after 54 years of marriage, and still amazing after all these years. He will be missed by his daughter Amber, and her children, Caitlin, Charlie and Jack of Valparaiso, Indiana, and by his son Andrew and Tracy of Atascadero, California. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and grandparents. He was just enough Irish to make a claim, but not a commotion.
