Howard Monroe Boxwell, 86, of Coralville, passed away from natural causes on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City with The Rev. Lauren Lyon officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 10-11:00 AM at the funeral home prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Howard Boxwell Memorials Fund in care of Brian Boxwell.

Howard was born October 18, 1934 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Howard Franklin Boxwell and Lottie Mae Sanders. On June 25, 1960 he married Carol Lynn Dunn in Davenport, IA. They had five children: Deborah, Scott, Jeffrey, Brian, and Robert. Carol preceded him in death on August 12, 2005.

Howard worked for the University of Iowa from 1981 -1996 as a carpenter. After retirement, he worked at Hawkeye Foodservice and as a greenskeeper at The Fairview Golf Course, retiring from both in 2007. He was enlisted in the United States Army from 1957-1963. Howard was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the American Legion since 1958. He enjoyed bowling, cards, fast-pitch, slow-pitch softball and golf; he even had a hole-in-one at Fairview Golf Course. Howard was also inducted into the Iowa City Men’s Bowling Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his three children, Deborah “Debby” (Kevin Shaffer) Knottnerus of Riverside, Brian (Denise) Boxwell of Solon and Robert “Bobby” Boxwell of Riverside; five grandchildren: Mitchell, Alexander, Garrett, Hannah, and Joseph and one great grandchild, Christopher Boxwell.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; two sons, Scott, and Jeff; and two siblings, Sandra Kessler and Edward Boxwell.
