In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mary to the Windham Community Church, 1424 Black Diamond Rd SW, Oxford, Iowa.

Mary was born on January 24, 1932 in Nichols, Iowa to Martin and Loretta (Hazen) Christofferson. She grew up in Nichols, and graduated from Nichols High School. Following high school graduation, she married the love of her life Robert “Bob” Soukup, at The Little Brown Church, in Nashua, Iowa on June 3, 1950. The couple spent 64 loving and memorable years together before he passed away in 2015. She lost a part of herself the day she lost her husband, the man she had raised four children with, living in Windham since 1951. She and her husband owned and operated the Windham Grocery Store for fifty years.

Raising her four children was her greatest joy and she even ran a private daycare from home for close friends and family. She was often referred to as “Mom” by many which she loved as taking care of others came natural to her. After her children were older, Mary stayed busy working for Frohweins, Drug Fair, and Walgreens. She had a passion and love for animals, especially stray cats. But for hours, she would watch her bird feeders for her favorite bird, the Cardinals to show up and get so excited about seeing them each and every time.

Mary loved to be in contact with loved ones, writing and receiving letters was a highlight for her, and she was known for writing letters with the most beautiful cursive penmanship. She loved to watch sports and especially loved watching The Hawkeyes both men and women. Mary was a member of the Windham Community Church, where she had many friends and proudly sang with the choir. Mary was an active volunteer. She was a 4-H leader and always wanted to help others in need. She happily belonged to two different Red Hat clubs and always looked forward to seeing them for lunch once a month.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and neighbor. Mary’s hobbies involved family as she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and most definitely her great-grandchildren. She had a kind heart, good sense of humor and a bright smile, all of which will be missed. To know Mary was to love Mary and you could be sure she loved you right back.

Survivors include three children: Dianne (Steve) Sturm of Washington, IA, Jeffrey Soukup of Williamsburg, IA, and Timothy (Latrenda) Soukup of Tiffin, IA, six grandchildren: Eric, Jennifer, Samantha, Neal, Quenisha, and Taijon; four great-grandchildren Ava, Emma, Mack, and Harlow; two sisters, Lois Cordwell of Muscatine, IA, and Nancy Christofferson of San Marcos, TX, as well as many extended family members.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bob, her son, David, and one brother, DeWayne Christofferson.

Online condolence may be sent to the family at www.lensingfuneral.com, where you may share memories of Mary.
