Douglas Arthur Tvedt was born to John Arthur and Nellie (Thiel) Tvedt on December 15, 1933 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Montour, Iowa living in the area until graduating from Montour High school in 1951. He attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) graduating with a BA in Business Education in 1955. While at ISTC he met Gail Gustafson whom he married on August 13, 1955 in Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to Sac City, Iowa where he taught high school for two years. Doug later entered the management trainee program with Sears in Minneapolis, MN, eventually transferring to the offices at Sears Headquarters in Chicago, IL.

The family moved again in 1970 when Doug purchased The Airliner Restaurant in Iowa City, Iowa. He and Gail owned and operated The Airliner until 1988. While with The Airliner, Doug sponsored and was the part-time coach of The Airliner Men’s Basketball team. This team was comprised mostly of former University of Iowa basketball players with some players coming from other colleges and universities. The Airliner Team won multiple national amateur championship titles (AAU, NABA). The Airliner also played in exhibition games against college teams including The University of Iowa, Drake, UNLV, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Bradley and LSU. Doug took The Airliner Team and represented the United States in Argentina and Mexico. He also took an All-Star Basketball Team representing the USA to Yugoslavia to play a series of games against the Olympic Gold Medal Yugoslavian Basketball team.

After selling the restaurant, they moved to Florida for a couple of years, working part time as real estate agents while there. They left real estate to become Sales Representatives for Giftbox Corporation of America, selling gift packaging in Florida, later transferring to Wisconsin, then back to Iowa City, selling in territories in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. After 20 years working with GiftBox Corp., Doug worked part time for 10 years driving and transferring cars on dealer trades for local car dealers before finally retiring. Doug enjoyed travel, history, genealogy, spending time with his family and watching his twenty grandchildren participate in sports and other activities.
