Merle Vincent Opheim Jr., age 76 (5/21/44 - 2/12/2021), passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a 2-year battle with cancer.

He grew up as the oldest of seven children which enabled him to become a dedicated provider with a strong work ethic. Merle translated his work ethic to an advancing career in Iowa City, culminating with his retirement from ACT as director of distribution.

He was a devoted Hawkeye fan with a lifelong passion for sports and he reveled in the time he was scouted by the Chicago White Sox, as well as, recounting his victories over many "inferior opponents".

In later years, Merle spent time with his family, particularly enjoying the antics of his two beautiful granddaughters. He also looked forward to being with close friends while fishing in Texas and perfecting his golf game at West Liberty Country Club. His crowning achievement, a hole-in-one, leaving little doubt that he can "still kick your A$$!"

Merle is preceded in death by his father Merle Opheim Sr., mother Ardis Opheim, and daughter Benita Carriger (Opheim). He is survived by his wife Michele Opheim, daughter Bryena Opheim, son Blaine (Tia Perez) Opheim, sister Linda (Bill) Purdy, brother Butch (Bobbie), brother Randy (Sinva), brother Daryl (Johnna), sister Debbie (Veryl) Hayes, and brother Kevin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family in care of Michele Opheim, to honor Merle with planting a tree at West Liberty Country Club.
