We are sad to announce that on January 28, 2021, at the age of 83, Marilyn June Cooney Reese of Muscatine, Iowa passed away of Covid. Before she passed away, she asked us to tell everyone to be safe because life is precious.

She was predeceased by her parents, Sydney F. Cooney and Mildred L. Seal Cooney, as well as a sister, Janet Cooney Martin and three brothers: Keith E. Cooney, Francis (Frank) L. Cooney, and Darrel L. Cooney. She is survived by a son, Scott Reese and family (Iowa City); a brother, Marvin D. Cooney (Muscatine) and nieces Karen Cooney, Diane Cooney Tank, Trina Martin Curtis and Lisa Cooney who cared for her during these past few years. Marilyn also had an abundance of nieces and nephews and friends that will miss her sense of humor and her card playing abilities.

Family and friends may make a contribution to: Riding for Success - Muscatine or your local Humane Society. You may also leave a sympathy message to the family online on the memorial page of the Tribute Wall of Marilyn Cooney Reese to pay her a last tribute.

Marilyn was a school teacher in Wilton and Davenport Schools, where later in her career she made a difference by teaching teenagers that could not go to school directly for various reasons and always encouraged higher education. She also trained horses and rode in many parades throughout the area. She loved all dogs and believed in adoption of rescue animals. Women’s fast pitch softball will remember her as a pitcher who played against her nieces, Karen Cooney and Linda Cooney Fix. Karen once hit a line drive right into Marilyn’s glasses and breaking them but it did not stop her from trying to put her out at first base. It was a story that she loved to tell everyone including doctors and nurses.

There are many more stories and Marilyn asked that we have fun telling those stories at a Celebration of Life. She asked that the Celebration also be for her brother, Darrel Cooney and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Pearl Cooney (Marvin Cooney) who both passed in 2020. This celebration will be held once we know the pandemic is over per her instructions for all to stay safe.
