Maxine J. Skubal, 87, of Iowa City died peacefully, Sunday, June 19, 2005 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by her family.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, June 23 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church with the Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens. Friends may call Wednesday, June 22 from 4:00 to7:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 5:00pm and Parish Vigil Service will be held at 6:30PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Maxine was born September 9, 1917 the daughter of Martin and Nellie Searle McMahon. She received her early education in rural schools and in 1935 graduated from Lone Tree High School. Following graduation, she was employed by the Baumer Insurance Agency in Lone Tree and later at the Larew Company of Iowa City.

On May 2, 1946 Maxine married Charles Skubal at St. Mary’s Church in Lone Tree. She and her husband moved to the family farm east of Riverside where she assisted her husband in its operation for many years. After they retired from farming, Maxine was employed by the University of Iowa for ten years at Hillcrest Dormitory. She retired in 1984.

In 1981, she and her husband moved to Iowa City, where she was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

The light of Maxine’s life was her grandchildren. She was an avid Iowa Men’s Basketball fan and enjoyed gardening and jigsaw puzzles.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Iowa City Hospice and Mercy Hospital 3 West for their wonderful care during her illness.

Maxine is survived by her husband, her son Ron of Madison, Wisconsin, two grandchildren, Nicole and Marty both of Madison, two sisters, Marjorie Rosenfield of West Liberty and Helen Swailes of Iowa City, two nephews and a niece.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, James.
