He attended schools in West Branch graduating from West Branch High School in 1966. His first job was at Hales and Hunter in West Branch. He retired from this job after 39 years in 2010. Now he could devote full time to his business Schooley’s Lawn Service which he started in 1977. Many would say that mowing became his life’s passion and he lost much when he had to retire in 2019 due to his health.

His family includes his wife, Lou who he married on June 5, 1971 in Curlew, Iowa; their three daughters, Cory Barnes (Matthew Wagner), Kelly Kelley (Matthew) and Stacey Schooley; 5 grandchildren, Samantha, Jonathan, Jacob, Calin, and Nevaeh; and Gary’s sister, Dona Tuttle (Pete); and numerous nieces and nephews.
