Theresa Mareta McCallum, 91, died peacefully on Sunday, December 13, 2020.

Family committal services were held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Fr. Steven Witt officiated.

Theresa was born May 7, 1929 to Joseph and Mary (Mazzini) Mareta. She grew in up in Marseilles, IL and worked in her family’s grocery store, the F. &M. Market. She attended Beloit College and Depauw University, graduating in 1951. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She married John (Jack) Patrick McCallum, also from Marseilles, IL, on June 23, 1951. They moved to Peru, IL, where they resided until Jack’s death in 2016. She then moved to Iowa City to be closer to family and lived at Legacy Pointe and Legacy Gardens.

Theresa is survived by her two daughters, Lisa (Don) Patterson of Iowa City, IA and Mia McCallum (Mark Kawamura) of Murphy, TX.; her granddaughter, Brooke Patterson of Iowa City; her brother, Joseph (Carole) Mareta of Whiting, IN; and brother and sister-in-law, Frank (Dee) McCallum of Marseilles, IL.

All parts of Theresa’s life were infused by her artistic eye. She loved color and design. She was able to paint, needlepoint and knit beautifully. Mia and Mark cherish the chair cushions and window valances she designed and needlepointed for them and Brooke’s home is filled with her paintings. She enjoyed clothing and always dressed with style and flare, cutting a stylish figure wherever she went. She had a multitude of black and gold clothing to wear to cheer on the Hawkeyes during football and bowl games while her son-in-law, Don, coached. Her love of shopping continued up until she passed.

We would like to thank the Legacy family for their loving care and compassion for Theresa, as well as UI Family Medicine and Iowa City Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Voluntary Action Center in LaSalle, IL (https://vacdk.com) or Alzheimer’s Disease Research Fund through the University of Iowa Center for Advancement (donate.givetoiowa.org).
