There died at Niles, Michigan, on the 5th inst., one whose memory deserves some recognition at the hands of Iowa newspapers. Lawson A. Duncan was born in Indiana in 1832, learned the printer’s trade, and, in 1858, came to Iowa and started the Iowa City Republican. In 1862 he was appointed one of the commissioners to settle the state’s claims against the general government for swamp lands, but resigned this to take the place of adjutant of the 40th Iowa regiment,—a regiment he remained with until the close of the civil war, retiring with the rank of major. At its close he settled up his business and went to Niles, Mich., where he has since lived. From 1866 to 1899 he was editor of the Niles Republican, filling during that time civil and political offices with honor to himself. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. B, F. Smith, of this city.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles, MI. He was born January 21, 1832.
