James E "Jim" Ashby, 64, 811 Edgewater Drive, Coralville, died Friday morning at Morning Sun Care Center after a long illness.
Services will begin Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the George L Gay Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. The Reverend Richard White officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations will go to University of Iowa Handicap Schools.
He was born December 27, 1926 in Oakville, a son of Fred and Marie Hartsock Ashby. He married Carolyn King September 19, 1964 at Lone Tree. He graduated from Wapello High School and attended Parsons College.
He worked for Northwestern Bell for 34 years, retiring in 1982. He was a paratrooper in World War II and was a member of Coralville American Legion, Northwestern Bell Pioneers and received the Theodore M Vail Bronze Medal for heroic deeds in 1957.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Renee (Mrs. Ronald) Kelley of Burlington; a son Craig Ashby of Phoenix, Ariz.; a step daughter, Cheryl (Mrs. Bill) White of North Liberty; a brother Daryl Ashby of Morning Sun; a sister Elba Harbison of Anchorage, Alaska and one grandson.
His parents died earlier.
