Ray E. Davenport, 71, of 2608 Quincy Road NE, died Sunday, April 24, 2005 at his home following an extended illness.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at 2 PM at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dwight DuBois officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery.
The family will greet friends after 1PM, Wednesday at the Church. A reception in the church hall will follow the committal. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Ray was born March 7, 1934 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of E.E. and Anne Herbst Davenport. Ray received his BS degree from the University of Iowa and attended two years of medical school at the University. On January 20, 1967 he married Judith Allbee in Davenport, Iowa.

Ray was employed at the University of Iowa for forty five years. His early work involved metabolic research and the development of nutritional surveys for both industry and schools. In later years he did research and publicationsin the Department of Psychiatry and served as their network systems administrator.

Throughout his life he was active with the Boy Scouts. As a youth he attained the rank of Eagle Scout and received numerous other honors. As an adult he served many years as Scoutmaster for Solon Troop #120.

Ray was also a 1st Lieutenant in the Iowa National Guard Medical Battalion out of Iowa City, Iowa for fifteen years.

Ray loved the out of doors. He enjoyed horseback riding, bird watching, fishing, fly-tying and astronomy. Reading and working with computers were also favorite pastimes.

Ray is survived by his wife, Judith; five daughters, Rayma Meyers of Omaha, Donna Marie (Jeff) Murphy of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Harriette (Jon) Bell of Tipton, Iowa, Heather (David) Brown of Marion, Iowa, Michelle Davenport of Iowa City; two sons, Michael and Marc Davenport, of Iowa City; six grandchildren, Jamey, Cody, Hawkeye, Andrea, Austin, Corey; two great grandchildren, Samantha and Jordyn;
One sister, Joan (Walter) Smith of Marshalltown. He was cherished and beloved dearly by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Gene, Harper and Richard.
